Criminal Law M.C. Bruce has handled hundreds of felony cases, including many successful trial matters. He has handled everything from assault cases to frauds to sex crimes. He understands that a vigorous and aggressive defense is the best policy for dealing with these matters, and has successfully convinced the prosecutor to dismiss some cases, and obtained reduction to misdemeanor on others.

M.C. Bruce’s Notable Cases:

In one well known Orange County matter, he represented a young woman accused of embezzling money from her employer. The single mother had been going through a bitter divorce at the time of the alleged theft, and M.C. Bruce showed the jury that the woman’s state of mind lead to mistakes in her handling of the day’s receipts, which was exploited by a co-worker who was actually the embezzler. The single mother was acquitted of the charge.

A young black man had been accused of an armed robbery by a neighbor who had identified him to police. M.C. Bruce was able to demonstrate to the prosecutor that the woman’s identification was flawed because of suggestive circumstances. The prosecutor dismissed the case.

In front of one of the most conservative judges in Orange County, M.C. Bruce defended a young Latino who was accused of stealing a car. The police had arrested him in a neighborhood where a stolen car had been found. M.C. Bruce demonstrated in court that the young man had actually been on bicycle in the neighborhood where he was arrested, a bicycle owned by his brother. The judge, who had never dismissed a case at prelim in his 20 years on the bench, not only dismissed the case but admonished the prosecutor for filing against the young man.

If You Are Arrested on a Felony:

  1. DO NOT TALK TO THE POLICE. They will use your statements against you in court, no matter what you say.
  2. DO NOT TALK TO ANY OF YOUR FELLOW INMATES IN THE JAIL. They will “snitch” on you to try to get a better deal for themselves.
  3. DO NOT TALK TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY ABOUT THE CASE. Most of these persons can be subpoenaed to testify against you!
  4. CONTACT A LAWYER IMMEDIATELY. The sooner the defense begins its own investigation, the better for you.
  5. Preserve any evidence that will help you in the case. This includes emails, faxes, telephone records. DO NOT DESTROY ANY EVIDENCE.
